Tropical Western Pacific, and as far south as northern New Zealand.

It is usually black with blue markings, but a dark green colour is found in specimens from the cooler waters of New South Wales, Australia, and northern New Zealand. Like all species of Tambja, it feeds on arborescent (plant-like) bryozoan colonies.
